Why do companies need CO2 footprints and how do they determine theirs?

Climate protection is one of the most important topics for corporate sustainability. More and more customers, investors and employees attach importance to ecological responsibility and ambitious climate goals. What role do CO2 footprints play for companies in this context?

The short answer is: what is not measured cannot be optimised.

The detailed answer is: With a CO2 footprint you identify where and how many emissions occur within your company or in your value chain. The CO2 footprint enables you to develop targeted measures, such as electricity efficiency or mobility concepts. Often you will not only save CO2 emissions, but also costs.

The CO2 footprint is therefore the starting point of a holistic climate protection strategy. And this is how you proceed:

à Use internationally recognised standards to maintain comparability between companies, sectors and countries. The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol divides the emission types into three areas (so-called scopes) and thus avoids double counting.

à Define the observation horizon, i.e. choose organisational, temporal and operational system boundaries. This will provide you with the basis for comparing your climate performance in subsequent years and for preparing sustainability reports.

à Capture the relevant activity data of your company such as on heating, electricity, logistics and transport - depending on the selection of your scopes to be considered.

à Calculate the CO2 footprint of your company by multiplying your activity data with specific emission factors.

According to the principle "Avoid - Reduce - Compensate", you can define and prioritise fields of action on this basis.

Sustainability is a growth driver! Through credible climate protection, you appeal to a large number of customers who pay attention to sustainability. By reducing climate risks, your company remains resilient and sustainable in the long term.

The M&P Group is happy to actively support you with holistic climate protection strategies.
