Forests are the lungs of our planet — and in Germany, they cover roughly 32.3% of the national area. They provide essential habitats for animals and plants, regulate the climate, and store vast amounts of CO₂. Yet, today, these forests are facing one of their greatest challenges.
Climate change, recurring droughts, and pest infestations have severely damaged Germany’s woodland ecosystems. Recent reports show that more than 80% of forests are considered unhealthy. The Thuringian Forest, one of the country’s most iconic natural landscapes, has been particularly affected. Large-scale deforestation has left behind barren, eroded areas where rich ecosystems once flourished.
As part of its mission to drive ecological restoration and sustainable resource management, MuP Water – Part of SIERA supports initiatives like the Baumpaten Deutschland Tree Challenge. By linking reforestation and water resilience, MuP Water helps ensure that restored forests not only grow — but thrive in balance with local water cycles and soil health.
The Baumpaten Deutschland Initiative: Planting Hope, One Tree at a Time
To combat environmental degradation, Baumpaten Deutschland has launched a national tree-planting initiative focused on restoring ecosystems and strengthening climate resilience.
The concept is simple: every tree counts. The project plants regional and site-appropriate tree species sourced exclusively from certified German nurseries to ensure local adaptation and biodiversity.
Through a structured tree sponsorship model, both private individuals and organizations can actively contribute to reforestation. This long-term approach transforms donors into direct participants in ecological recovery and sustainable land management.
Antenne Thüringen and Baumpaten Deutschland: The Tree Challenge
In 2024, Antenne Thüringen joined Baumpaten Deutschland to launch the Tree Challenge, a regional campaign with a clear and measurable goal:
100,000 new trees in the Thuringian Forest by the end of 2026.
The initiative represents a collective effort to reconnect communities with nature and take meaningful climate action. It highlights how collaboration between media partners, sustainability organizations, and technical experts such as MuP Water can accelerate ecosystem restoration.
Each planted tree contributes to carbon capture, soil regeneration, biodiversity, and microclimate stabilization. Together, these outcomes create a resilient landscape capable of supporting water retention, reducing erosion, and maintaining hydrological balance — essential aspects of MuP Water’s integrated sustainability vision.
Our Contribution: 20 Trees for the Future
We are proud to support the Tree Challenge by sponsoring 20 trees in the Thuringian Forest. This contribution reflects our shared commitment to sustainability, climate protection, and community-driven restoration.
Every single tree stands for renewal — for life, resilience, and collaboration. Together, we can rebuild degraded landscapes and shape a more sustainable tomorrow.
Why Tree Sponsorship and Water Management Go Hand in Hand
Tree sponsorships are a vital entry point into broader climate action. They restore ecosystems, improve air quality, and foster biodiversity — but they also play a crucial role in water management. Wassermanagement.
Healthy forests:
• restore the natural water balance and promote groundwater recharge,
• stabilize soils and prevent surface runoff and erosion,
• mitigate local climate fluctuations and store moisture,
• create buffer zones that improve water quality and prevent flooding.
These interconnections make reforestation an essential complement to MuP Water’s mission — developing smart, sustainable water infrastructure and climate adaptation strategies for communities and industries.
Sustainability Through Local Action
The focus on regional and site-specific planting ensures that new forests thrive under the local environmental conditions of Thuringia. By using saplings from German nurseries, Baumpaten Deutschland not only ensures high quality and low transport emissions but also supports local economies.
Join the Movement
Reforesting Thuringia is not just a project; it is a movement for ecological resilience. And everyone can be part of it.
Whether you are an individual, a municipality, or a company, you can contribute by becoming a tree sponsor and supporting the restoration of one of Germany’s most vital forest ecosystems.
Join us in rebuilding Thuringia’s green heart and strengthening its natural water systems for generations to come.
