Modernisation of the former bowling alley into the Leipzig Museum of Natural History

| Project | The building of the former bowling centre is owned by the City of Leipzig on the Leipzig land parcels 3754, 4016/3 and partly 1207. It was built in 1925/26 as an underground transformer station and used in this function until 1965. The underground parts of the building extend in a west-east direction. The western part is four-storeyed, its cross-section tapering in the two lower storeys. The fourth basement is of very limited use due to the low room height of about two metres. The eastern part is single-storey. The floor of the fourth basement is about 15 metres below ground level, the floor of the single-storey east wing about 5.5 metres. The original entrance building was located between the wings of the building. According to a design by Winfried Sziegoleit, the building complex was converted into a recreational sports facility in 1986/87 and has since been known as the "Bowlingtreff". There were eight and six bowling lanes respectively in the two halls with skylight windows. The new, octagonal entrance building (Oktagon) sets an important urban accent and, like the former underground substation, is a listed building. The fountain on the forecourt, as well as the outdoor facilities (stairs, ramps) enclosing the Oktagon building, are listed as a self-contained ensemble.
The bowling club was closed in 1997 and has been unused since then. The building has been largely cleared. Today it has an area of approx. 5,800 m² (without the 4th basement floor). |
